With Slay the Spire, Mega Crit Games has proven that it's more than capable of meeting such challenges. Roguelikes are difficult to get right, and often times the struggle of developers balancing these experiences between player frustration and enjoyment mirrors the difficulty players face when trying to survive them. Hopefully, it won't be long for Mega Crit to provide more jucier details. As the developer has already expressed the desire to venture outside of Slay the Spire, perhaps the next project will also deviate from its card based gameplay. With the announcement of the Slay the Spire board game on Kickstarter a while back, one wonders if Mega Crit will try their hand at a classic board game approach for a new roguelike - assuming it is indeed a roguelike. While not much to go on, this official confirmation is still great news for fans eagerly anticipating Mega Crit's next game. These design choices helped Mega Crit make a beloved standout in the roguelike genre, with Slay the Spire receiving strong reviews at launch. This atmosphere is complemented by the ease of learning card synergies and developing different decks for ascending the Spire without players feeling like they've made a wrong choice in their methods. Anyone familiar with the deck-building tabletop dungeon crawler Gloomhaven, or traditional card-based games like Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone will find something to like here. But beneath it all it’s got a wonderfully balanced fighting mechanic. The characters just sorta jiggle around on the screen. One thing that the game is woefully short on, though, is animations. There’s a leaderboard, and the game has already been translated into more than a dozen languages. I found potions and totems of all kinds scattered around the procedurally generated levels, and hours in I’m still unlocking new surprises.
